Peabody, Kansas

Of special interest in the Prairie Lawn Cemetery whose association began in 1880, is its close connection with the Civil War.Around 125 graves of veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic are found here. According to the Peabody Historical Society, more may exist, although they are unmarked.

Among the many veterans buried here is Llewellyn Adelbert Buck originally from Maine and enlisted in the 2nd Regiment, U.S. Sharpshooters. He was sent by special order to the hospital department. Buck, a physician, was reportedly present at the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and helped move the dying president. Buck moved to Peabody in 1876 where he practiced medicine for 30 years.

Each Memorial Day Weekend, a "cemetery tour" takes place in Peabody, with opportunities to meet some "characters from the past." Bus rides leaving from the Brown Building are available. The tour begins at 1 p.m.
